HOW COUNSELLING WORKS
It is my personal belief that therapy works only in a situation where the client feels safe, can fully trust the therapist and the therapist is “real.“ Carl Rogers summarizes the importance of the therapeutic relationship and writes, “When the other person is hurting, confused, troubled, anxious, alienated, and terrified; or when he or she is doubtful of self-worth, uncertain as to identity, then understanding is called for. The gentle and sensitive companionship of an empathic stance… provides illumination and healing. In such situations, deep understanding is, I believe, the most precious gift one can give to another.”
An empathetic therapist validates the client’s internal experiences and facilitates the client’s development of a stronger and more flexible sense of self.
I really understand how challenging this can be and that is why I never push a client to talk about things until they feel ready to do so. Instead, we work together and you talk about things when you feel safe and ready to do so. Trust and respect are at the cornerstone of the therapeutic relationship between me and my client.
Therapy is about addressing your difficulties and working towards meaningful change. Entering into a counselling or psychotherapeutic relationship primarily involves gaining a deeper understanding and acceptance of who you are. “People start to heal the moment they feel heard“– Cheryl Richardson
